Camden Maine Islands - return to a simpler way of life by visiting a Maine island community

Penobscot Bay is known for its scenic beauty and its many surrounding islands. Roughly 40 miles long by 30 miles wide, this body of water is dotted with hundreds of small islands but four major islands make up the bulk of visitor activity. They are Vinalhaven, North Haven, Islesboro, and Matinicus. Monhegan Island in adjacent Muscongus Bay is also notable because it is the most famous island in Maine.

These major islands along with the numerous smaller (mostly uninhabitated) islands provide protection from the open Atlantic ocean and make Penobscot Bay one of the ten greatest cruising bays in the world. The abundance of inlets, coves, hidden anchorages, picturesque harbors and surrounding islands makes this coastal area of Maine unlike anything else on the Eastern seaboard of the United States. A major share of Maine's more than 3000 miles of coastline as well as a majority of its islands lie in Penobscot Bay and the Midcoast Maine region.

Visiting any of the main islands will give you a true sense of what it is like to live in a traditional New England seafaring community. Although most of the major islands have many modern conveniences of daily life, the scope and range of amenities is on a much smaller scale here. Maine island life is a bit rustic and cursory, and that requires a sense of patience, tolerance, adventure, independence, and humor from those who visit. If you would like to experience life as lived in a simpler time, then visiting any of the island communities in Penobscot Bay is worth the trip.

Islesboro Island - Isleboro, ME

Islesboro is a small island as well as a well-known resort community that is located 3 miles off of Lincolnville Beach. Positioned near the top of Penobscot Bay, Islesboro stretches for about fourteen miles but is a fairly narrow island with a width of about one and a half miles across at its widest point. The island has about 650 year-round residents which roughly triples in population during the summer. Access to this island is mainly governed by the "Margaret Chase Smith," the Maine State island ferry that makes the three mile journey in about 30 minutes and runs daily from Lincolnville Beach. The island has several parks - most notably Warren Island State Park - and picnic areas as well as a couple of general stores. The island is a popular place for hikers, bicyclists and naturalists interested in exploring and experiencing the incredible scenic vistas of a Maine island community.

A puffin colony is located on nearby Matinicus Rock. The island's natural features such as secluded sandy beaches and meandering walking paths make Matinicus an ideal venue for hikers and bird watchers. The island is about two miles long and a mile wide with a year round population of 55, mostly working lobster fishermen and their families. There are very few automobiles on Matinicus as this island is best served by visitors interested in hiking or exploring the island by foot. Services include gift shop, post office, telephone, airstrip, church, a small public school, a few cottage rentals, a quaint bed and breakfast, and the island bakery. Visiting and/or staying on Matinicus is much like going back in time with a pace and lifestyle that is virtually free of modern day stresses.

Monhegan Island - Monhegan, ME

Once desribed as the “Crown Jewel of Musconsgus Bay,” Monhegan Island is a tiny, rocky island (barely a square mile in size) located about ten miles southeast of the fishing village of Port Clyde. Monhegan Island is the most famous of Maine’s island communities, thanks in large part to its setting for and inspiration of important works of art by celebrated artists like Rockwell Kent, Robert Henri, Winslow Homer, A. J. Hammond, Edward Hopper and many more who found inspiration in the island’s overall unspoiled charm and scenic beauty. Monhegan is accessible only by boat, and cars are not even allowed on the island. A major part of the island is designated as a wildlife sanctuary with more than 500 varieties of flowers and 200 species of birds. Monhegan is visited by thousands of tourists and aspiring artists each summer, who hike the high cliffs, island woods and rocky shoreline to gain their own artistic and personal perspective.
